Shoulder Pain · Gig Harbor

Reach for the top shelf again.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which is why it gets hurt so easily. Often the neck and upper back are part of the story.

Tick the ones that fit.

Not a diagnosis. Just a quick way to see whether your pain has the pattern we treat every day.

Shoulder pain usually comes from the rotator cuff, the joint capsule, or the neck and upper back referring pain into the shoulder. Sorting out which one matters, because they need different treatment.

What it can feel like

  • Pain reaching overhead, behind your back or across your body
  • An ache at night, especially lying on that side
  • Weakness lifting or carrying
  • Clicking, catching or a feeling the shoulder might give way
  • A shoulder that gets stiffer month by month (frozen shoulder)

Common causes

  • Rotator cuff strain or tendinopathy
  • Impingement from poor shoulder-blade movement
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Overuse: painting, lifting, racquet sports, swimming
  • Referred pain from the neck
  • Seat-belt injury in a car accident

How we treat it

We check the neck and upper back first, because they often drive shoulder pain. Care then combines joint adjustments to the shoulder, upper back and ribs, soft-tissue therapy, and a rotator cuff and shoulder-blade rehab program through physiotherapy.

For stubborn tendinopathy and calcific tendinitis, shockwave therapy can speed healing in tissue that has stopped responding. We refer for imaging or an orthopedic opinion when a full tear or significant weakness is suspected.

When to seek urgent care. Shoulder pain that comes on suddenly with chest pressure, shortness of breath or sweating can be a heart problem. Call 911.

How getting better usually goes

Four stops.

First visit

Answers.

You leave knowing what it is, what the plan is, how long it should take, and what it costs with your insurance.

Weeks 1–2

Relief.

Pain down, motion up. Visits are closer together while the joints learn to move again and the muscles stop guarding.

Weeks 3–6

Rebuild.

Physiotherapy makes it hold: the muscles that let you down get strong enough to carry you. The part most people skip, and the part that keeps it from coming back.

After

Your life back.

A short home routine, a check-in now and then, and the door open if it ever flares.
